How to License Your Commercial Fishing Business with the NOAA Fisheries Service

All commercial fishing businesses operating in the oceans around the United States require federal law to obtain licenses and permits from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). These permits are issued and administered by the regional offices, in which you depend on the fish in which you plan to kill fish. In order to license your commercial fishing business with the NOAA Fisheries Service, you should file an application with the supporting documents and fees to the appropriate regional office.

Completing Your Application

Contact your NOAA Regional Office. There are five Regional Offices of NOAA who issue permits to the fish in the water and administer them. Your regional office will have information about the requirements of the permit and how to maintain its permit after issuance.

The five regional offices cover Alaska, Greater Atlantic, Pacific Island, South-East and West coast areas.

If you are fishing on the high seas, you will need a high sea permit in addition to the permit for those areas where you plan to kill fish.

For example, if you are fishing in the Pacific Ocean, then you will likely need a permit for a high sea permit along with the West Coast area, the Alaska region, and the Pacific Island area.

To catch fish in the Alaska region, you may need to list your ship under other treaties or compacts so that you can get permission for fish in Canada or Russian water.

If you contact the nearest regional office and explain where you are fishing, they can tell you what permit you will need.

Visit the NOAA Fisheries Farm Portal. NOAA provides web access to many forms and permit applications, which you will need to obtain and maintain your commercial fishing permit. In addition to national forms, area-specific forms are also available.

Some of these are field field PDFs, while there are other web-based forms, which you can complete and broadcast online.

Forms for online transmission can be available to download and print.

The form portal also has contact email for each regional offices and individuals of those offices who handle specific types of applications.

Download the appropriate form. The forms you need are dependent on where you want to go and what kind of fish you want to catch. If you are fishing on high seas and going through many areas, you may need to get a permit for each area.

The best way to ensure that you are getting all the permissions you need, talk to someone in your nearest regional office and tell them about the operation of your commercial fishing.

While a type of type of fish requires a permit, it does not mean that if you do not get a permit for a type of fish, then you are not allowed to take it. In addition to those fish you are targeting mainly, they may end up in your trap, but your acceptable catch number will be different.

Keep in mind that fishing in one area without proper permit can result in harsh fines as well as possible jail time.

Fill out your form. The complete information about your fishing vessel, its ownership, the types of fish you take and your fishing methods should be fully filled. For some classes, you may need to submit additional documents.

You must apply primarily for the Federal Fisheries Permit (FFP) to fill. Although each region has its own FFP application, the information you should provide is similar to everyone. However, the types of fish listed on FFP of each region will vary.

You must be a U.S. citizen to receive FFP in any area.

Include information about your vessel, including the full name of the vessel and the owner’s name, address and phone number. If there are more than one owner, then first list the master owner.

You must also include your ship’s home port, its US Coast Guard documentation number and other registration numbers. Write the overall length and registered length in the legs, and attach a colorful picture of the vessel for your application.

In the application, you also need information about the type of gear on your ship and the fish that you wish to use that gear.

Submit your application packet. Your permit application and supporting document should be sent to the NOAA Regional Office, which gives permits for those water with the necessary fees. Applications should be sent for many areas in each separate office.

Usually, you must submit your application online or in the U.S. Mail must be matched using it. Most regional offices allow the use of express mail if you want to get your application soon.

Your application should be accompanied by a suitable fee, which will vary depending on the type of permit you allow. For example, a high sea permit fee is $ 129.

If you are matching your application, then pay your fees with the check or money order payable to the US Department of Commerce – NOAA. You can use credit or debit cards for online submissions.

Your permit will be active between one to three years from the date of issue, depending on the type of permit.

Maintaining Your Permit

Get your logbook. Within two weeks of issuing your permit, the appropriate regional office will send you the official logbook for that year. If you do not receive the correct logbook within that period, you will have to contact the regional office to issue your permit.

Logbooks for the coming year are sent to permit holders every December.

If you have more than one permit, you may have several logbooks that should be used for each permit. Carefully label your logbook and make sure you are entering the correct information in the correct logbook.

You will also get an envelope supply to report back to logbook entries and regional office.

Fill your logbook on each trip. When you go on a fishing trip, use the logbook to quickly enter the number of fish that you catch and the gear is used to catch those fish.

The gear section contains information about each type of gear, including traps, longlines, gill nets and reels. You should list the number of traps or lines used, the number of hooks per line (in the case of long lines or reels), and total hours.

Submit reports and forms on time. Each travel report has to be filed in the Regional Office within seven days. If you do not go on a fishing trip for a whole month, you should not fill a “fishing” within seven days at the end of the month.

All reports should be sent to your regional office at the same address. You can get pre-addressed envelopes for this purpose.

You can contact the logbook program of the Regional Office at any time to confirm that your logbook and report are up-to-date with the office.

If you need a catch history for your vessel, you can fill the catch history request form and submit it to your regional office. You will receive a report that summarizes the catch history of your vessel under that permit.

Renewing Your Permit

Verify that your reports are up-to-date. Since logbook entries and reports are the main reasons, there may be a delay in renewal permission, make sure that you have submitted the necessary documents and logbooks for the month to register your renewal application.

You can call the logbook program number in the appropriate office to verify your record.

If you are not missing any reports or have failed to submit logbook entries, keep in mind those deficiencies before entering your renewal application.

Get your upgrade package. The appropriate regional office will normally mail a renewal package within two months of the scheduled date to terminate the permit. If you do not get the renewal package, then you are responsible for getting the form from the regional office itself.

Keep an eye on the dates of your permit and contact the regional office if the permit is scheduled to expire within a month and you have not yet received the renewal package.

Keep in mind that the renewal package is sent to your mailing address on the permit application. You need to keep this address up to date and if required, you can file a change of address form. However, if that address is no longer valid then you will have to get an application for renewal from the person in the Regional Office.

Fill out your renewal application. The renewal application should be completed completely, even if it usually asks for information that may be similar to the information of your original application.

The information you entered in your renewal application should be accurate according to the date of the renewal application.

In addition to the application with your full signature, you will be charged the appropriate amount and your vessel’s US. For the Coast Guard Certificate of Documentation or State Registration, a check or money order must be included.

Submit your application before the deadline. While some kind of permit can be renewed after the expiry, renewal of your permit before the expiration date ensures that you can continue your commercial fishing business without any interruption.

You can match your renewal application or use overnight delivery services. You can take it personally too. However, keep in mind that applications are processed in the same order in which they are received, so it is not necessary to get it there quickly so that it will be processed immediately.

Keep in mind that if you send in your renewal application before setting the date for ending your old permit, it can not be processed until that expiration date.

If your permit is terminated, then you are not allowed to do business fishing unless a renewal or new permit is issued.

The expiration of your permit can be long processing time for your application.
