How to Trace a Money Order

Money orders, like checks, allow you to specify who can cash them. They are useful if you do not have a checking account or if you do not want your personal information or bank account information to be accessible. Money orders, like checks, are frequently sent through the mail, which introduces some uncertainty. Fortunately, organisations that offer money orders also offer services for tracking the status of those orders. However, the utility and cost of these services vary depending on the issuer and whether or not you have your original receipt.

Tracing a Money Order with a Receipt, Method 1

1. Check that you have the correct receipt. To track your money order, you must have the correct receipt; that is, one that has the serial number or receipt number of the money order on it. This will be the stub on the side of the order for USPS money orders. This will be the bottom portion for Western Union orders.

Some resellers (convenience stores, supermarkets, and so on) may issue you an additional receipt that does not include the required numbers. This is not the receipt you require.

2. Determine who to contact. You will need to contact the money order’s issuer. This is the service that actually processes the order, which is typically your bank, the US Postal Service, or another money-transfer service such as MoneyGram or Western Union. The issuer’s name will also appear on the money order and receipt. You should not contact the money order’s reseller, which could be any convenience store, supermarket, or other store where the money order was purchased.

3. You can track the status of the money order online. Some issuers will allow you to track the money order online for free by entering the serial number. The USPS, for example, has an easy-to-use tracking site where you can check the status of your money order and see if it has been lost or stolen.

The majority of issuers do not provide online tracking. If you are unsure whether or not you can do so, contact the seller to see if it is possible.

4. Select a shipping method that includes a tracking number. Even if you cannot directly track the money order, you can usually track the physical package that contains it. Most mail services and post offices will provide a tracking number, which you can use to track the shipment’s location online. If the package does not arrive at its destination, show the shipper your money order receipt and request reimbursement.

5. Call the money order company. A customer service number can be found on the money order receipt or stub. Take the receipt to the Western Union or MoneyGram agent where you purchased the money order. The service will trace the money order for you after you fill out the necessary paperwork and pay a fee ($15 for Western Union). This could take up to 8 weeks for some tracing requests.

7. If the money order is lost or stolen, file a claim for replacement or compensation. This can be a simple or time-consuming process, depending on the issuer and the materials you can provide.

Customers can choose from a variety of compensation applications available through Western Union, and you must select the appropriate form based on the materials you have (serial number and receipt, for example). If the money order isn’t cashed, Western Union will either refund your money or replace it.

If you do not cash a MoneyGram money order, the full amount will be refunded to you within 30 to 65 days of submitting the proper paperwork. However, if the money order has already been cashed, you will only receive a photocopy of the cashed money order.

If you purchased the money order from the USPS and it is discovered to be lost or stolen, you will be able to receive compensation or a replacement no sooner than 60 days after filing the 6401 form claim mentioned above. USPS will charge a $6.10 processing fee.

Method 2: Tracing a Money Order in the Absence of a Receipt

1. Check to see if the money order can be traced without a receipt. Some banks and issuers will allow you to trace your money order without a receipt, while others will not. For example, if you’ve misplaced your receipt for a USPS money order and want to find it, don’t go any further. Without a receipt, the USPS will not allow you to trace a money order. Call your issuer’s customer service number (which is easily accessible on their website) to see if they can track a money order without a receipt.

Tracing orders through a non-bank issuer (such as MoneyGram or Western Union) without a receipt must be done in person at the store or with the agent from whom you purchased the money order, or via mail. Both options will require you to fill out a form that includes some or all of the above-mentioned information, pay a fee, and either turn it in at the store or mail it in.

A fee of $30 must be paid at the store or included with the mailed-in form for Western Union “Research Requests,” as these requests are known.
