How to Use an EBT Card

You can easily make purchases with your EBT (Electronic Benefits Transfer) card once you have been approved for basic food or cash assistance from the state, which is very convenient. Just make sure you know what benefits you have and how much money you have left in your account before you go shopping. After that, you can go to any authorised retailer and purchase the items you require there. In many ways, your card (which is referred to as a Quest card) functions similarly to a debit card. If you have cash benefits, you can even use it at an ATM to withdraw money. You can also check your account balances and other information by calling the customer service hotline or visiting the website. Some rules and benefits are different depending on where you live, but you can easily find out what those differences are by contacting customer support.

Method 1 Making a Purchase with Your EBT Card

1. Pay a visit to a store that has been authorised to accept EBT payments. EBT is accepted at a large number of grocery stores and convenience stores nationwide. You will be able to use your card if you see the Quest logo on the front door of the store or near the cash register. If you prefer, you can use the store locator found at If you have any questions about a specific store, you can call them and ask to speak with a customer service representative, who should be able to provide you with the information you require. You are unable to use EBT cards at the following locations:

Liquor stores

Wine stores

Places that offer adult-oriented entertainment

2. Select the food items that are eligible for purchase with your SNAP benefits. If you qualify for SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), you can use it to purchase groceries like dairy products, fruits, vegetables, meats, bread, cereals, and snack items. Always keep in mind that, while SNAP can be used to purchase a wide variety of products, there are some limitations. Before you go shopping, make sure to check the list of prohibited items at You are not permitted to use your SNAP benefits to purchase the following items:

Alcohol or tobacco

Vitamins, supplements, or medicine

Live animals

Hot foods

Cleaning supplies

Pet food

3. If you’re using cash benefits, you can add any additional items you require. If you receive cash benefits, you will have a great deal more purchasing flexibility. Any item can be purchased with the cash benefits on your EBT card, provided that it is purchased from a legitimate retail establishment. You can use your cash benefits to purchase household supplies, pet food, and other items that you might require.

4. To make a payment, proceed to the cashier’s window. Bring all of your purchases to the checkout counter, and if necessary, separate them into separate bags. For example, you might create two piles: one for items you want to buy with SNAP benefits and another for items you want to buy with cash benefits. Inform the cashier that you are utilising EBT and specify whether you are utilising food benefits, cash benefits, or a combination of the two.

Simply state, “I’m using the cash benefits from my EBT card to purchase these items.” Please make use of my food benefits from my EBT card for the remainder.”

5. Swipe your card or hand it to the clerk to complete the transaction. It is possible to swipe your card yourself if the store has the card reader in front of the customers. You only need to swipe your card once and then enter your 4-digit PIN, which you should have been given when you received your card. You can always call Customer Service and have it reset for you. If there isn’t a card reader available, simply hand your card to the clerk.

Make sure to inform them whether you are utilising cash or food assistance benefits. If you’re making two purchases with the same card, the merchant may need to swipe your card twice to process the transactions separately.

6. Check your receipt to ensure that all of the information is accurate. The clerk will hand you your receipt once the transaction has been completed successfully. Double-check the document to ensure that everything is correct. Your receipt will also show you how much money you have left over from your benefits.

Method 2 Getting Cash from an ATM

1. Find an ATM with the Quest logo on it and use it. Keep an eye out for ATMs when you’re out and about, and make a note of any that you might be able to use. You can also contact customer service and inquire about the locations of ATMs in your immediate vicinity. Make sure that the ATM is located in a well-lit area that is not too isolated in order to ensure your safety.

If possible, avoid using an ATM after dark. The daytime is the best time to use an ATM because it is more secure.

2. Insert your credit card and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the transaction. After you’ve inserted your card into the card reader, you’ll need to enter your PIN. After that, the machine will prompt you to make a selection. Select “withdrawal” and then “checking” from the drop-down menu. Enter the amount you wish to withdraw in whole numbers (e.g., $20, $40, etc.) in the withdrawal field.

It is possible that there will be a surcharge for using the ATM. If you wish to accept the charge, simply press the “yes” button. If you do not wish to pay the fee, you can cancel your transaction by pressing the “no” button.

3. Count your cash and check your receipt for accuracy. Once the money has been distributed by the machine, double-check to ensure that it is the correct amount. If it isn’t, you can contact customer service by dialling the number that is printed on the ATM.

Check your receipt to see if you have any new funds available.

4. Use your cash only for purchases that have been approved. You can use this money to purchase the majority of food and household items. You can purchase diapers, pet food, and cleaning supplies, among other things. In addition, you can purchase medication. It is against the law to use the cash for certain purposes, so make sure you are aware of the limitations in order to avoid getting into trouble. Don’t use cash from an EBT card to pay for the following:

Buy alcohol or tobacco

Get a tattoo or body-piercing

Purchase bail bonds

Go to an adult-entertainment business

Method 3 Checking the Balance and Other Information

1. Create a user account on the EBT website to begin using it. If you want to set up an account and view your benefits, you can do so at, regardless of where you live. Log in with your card number (which can be found on the front of the card) and PIN. After that, you’ll be prompted to create a username and password for your new account on the website.

2. Make use of the website to review critical information.. If you have access to the internet, take advantage of the website because it is the most efficient way to obtain information. You can see the following information in your account:

Your SNAP or cash benefits balance

Transaction history

How to change your PIN

How to report a lost, stolen, or damaged card

3. If you are unable to access the website, call the Customer Service Helpline. If you do not have access to the internet, you can still obtain the same information by calling the helpline. Call 1-888-238-6399 from anywhere in the United States. Customer service is available around the clock.
